Help Me Raise £1000 for 1000 Miles travelled in my powerchair by the 1st of July 2026: for ME Association
Todays roll took me 11 miles and took 5 hours including lunch. I was trying to find a route to Holy Trinity Church in Spital. I found quite a few curbs which were not passable, a corner of a street with a very awkward lampost, and cars parked in a way which made the path impassable. Eventually however I found a route which would get me there safely.
A really enjoyable day today visiting the theatre to see Mathew Bournes The Red Shoes. I had not seen it before and yet I still managed to follow the story.
Not going anywhere for now!
My NHS powered wheelchair is in some ways similar to me, it has no idea how much energy it has.
Plus it is very good at masking it (pretending) you can plug it into the charger for half an hour and when you turn it back on it will tell you the battery is full.
But it's lying!
The charger is more reliable, it has two orange lights one to indicate your below 80% of the battery and one to indicate your above 80% then a green light to say your full.
Problem is one full charge to green, and it will then go around 10 miles. But when it's lying it can reach 2 miles and suddenly show no power!
So for both my wheelchairs sake and mine we are both in for the day, or atleast till the charger goes green which will be a full 12 hours!
Somtimes the show must go on when you have nothing left to give. A quick fake smile on the way to school.
A bit of an unexpected evening, 9.30pm NHS 111 sent me to A&E for chest pains, ECG was ok so out of hours GP let me go home again.
A little bit of excitement on leaving at 1.30am when I managed to cause a scene!
At Arrow park hospital they have been redeveloping the outside areas. There is now a new entrance to A&E/ Urgent care and on the way to it is a lovely wheelchair friendly path, but for some unknown but aesthetic reason they have added a random patch of gravel.
Unfortunately at 1.30am it was too hard to see the colour difference between the hard path and the gravel and I came off into the gravel and became completely stuck. Unable to get of the gravel to my car my husband and 5 year old had to come rescue me. By the time they arrived two nice security guards had helped me from my wheelchair to another wheelchair and lifted my chair out the pebbles. They waited to make sure I could roll away and I was able to get to my car.
I think they need to reconsider the contrast between the path and pebbles as I won't be the only one.
A brighter sunnier day today, had the pleasure of rolling whilst on a group video call (hands free of course) so 4 more virtual people rolling forward with me. I went back up to the river park where it was sunny, cold, and a bit windy. Measured the benches to help write up an access by guide, so that's to follow. 11.8 Miles today but my wheelchair battery has run down to one red flashing light, so no more rolling till a full 12 hour charge. I will be able to use it just to get to the stair lift but then it's back to on charge. This is one of the choices we have to make, big day today so not much left for tomorrow.
Today I woke and rolled over to go back to sleep. I fought it and won and managed to join my husband and daughter in the car for the short ride to church. Enjoyed the service (an unapologetically christian post to follow shortly). Then after travelling back home in the car I suddenly decided I didn't want to go in the house. I didn't want to get stuck on the sofa and not make it back to the afternoon church service. So inspired by a topic of conversation of relying on Amazon. I decided to go to Matalan and buy erin's school uniform. From there I went to the croft retail park and on to the river park again. It was raining today and I wanted to try the accesible route I am going to write about in wet conditions. The importantly I rolled back to church and then home. A really fullfilling day for lots of reasons. I am tired and I may need to be kind to myself tomorrow but I feel good tonight. 😴
Today was a special day as I was going to the theatre. I didn't have to do the run to dancing as Karl was home. But instead of sitting on the sofa, I went with them to dancing and set out on a walk to the river park. Where I will be writting my first access review/guide. They picked me up from the river park and took me to collect a fellow Fibromyaligia friend. The to the theatre (review of Mary Poppins to come). A bit of a detour to get back to the car on the cobbles but worth it. My daughter even collected a balloon whilst waiting outside the theatre to collect us. Another 5.6 Miles added.
😀A little unwell today so some more unnegotiable miles out today. The school run and to the doctors. Was told i may have pnemonia (again). Decided I was always feeling unwel and a little freash air wouldn't hurt. So I rolled the long way back through Eastham Woods. 5.9 Miles added to my total today 😀
Managed to get back out of the house after a crash and sleep off on the sofa. This was a non negotiable (which helped) I needed to get my daughter to dancing, she was crying she wanted to go home the whole way. Which is a challenge on the bus but we persevered and she had a great time at dancing, whilst I got a few miles in, 3.7 Miles to be precise.
Chronic fatigue hits and I'm out for 3 hours with no warning. But I'm determined to show the good and the not so good. ME is real and I want it to be seen.
Today is a truddging through treacle kinda day.
My body is just letting me do the unnegotiables, like getting my little one to school.
Just 1.3 miles chipped of the total this morning. Now it's time to pause rolling forwards adn take a break.
Another 1.6 miles added to my challenge. Only out to get my daughter from after school club. I thought I'd go the long way around to get a bit further but I totally forgot it would bring me out on the other side of the School. Unfortunatley the curb isn't dropped on that side so I had to go all the way back around!
If it hadn't been dark I may have risked it, but my current chair is a little prone to forward tipping!
14th of January
7.30am
Total 56/1000 Miles Completed
2 more miles added to the total today. Only locally to drop the little one to school, to go to the shop and come the long way home to up my miles.
The puddles by the dropped curbs had frozen over today so a little bit of dodging needed.
